The historic and central road axis of Via Giovan Battista Fardella is lined with buildings constructed between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century.
These almost always belonged to a single family lineage, which is why they often took the surname of the family that had conceived their creation.
Most of these have now reached our days fragmented into smaller apartments which have often been transferred to other owners outside the original family nucleus.
Changes in today's society have often led families to live in spaces of increasingly smaller dimensions and have seen a further reduction in living space over the last decade. This phenomenon has been further highlighted by the current trend of turning these spaces into real mini apartments or even studio flats, to be used for tourism or short-term and seasonal rentals.
Of these apartments, once richly decorated in the floors or in the frescoed vaults, little or nothing of value remains, except for structural elements, as in this case, constituted by the beauty of the load-bearing vaults in tuff and the considerable height, which nowadays are rare inside homes.
It was precisely the two tuff vaults and the height of 4 meters that the "yellow submarine" project wanted to highlight by cleaning the first ones, thus bringing the tuff to the exposed face and using the height to create a comfortable sleeping area.
The choice of the color yellow that evokes a feeling of well-being and a spring and summer climate seemed suitable to infuse a certain amount of energy and give new life and character to this small loft of about 40 square meters.
The resin surface of the balcony, the shower and the raw iron of the staircase and the structural hoop, were specifically chosen as durable materials and act as a pivot between the various points of the house, where some notes of yellow are resumed, such as in correspondence with the handrail of the sleeping area and the rotating arm from which the lamp in the dining area descends.
All this amidst the sobriety of the oak parquet strips and the materiality of the tuff vaults and the trowelled wall surfaces.
Going up and down this space for a few days is a bit like living inside that cheerful Yellow Submarine described by the Beatles in the late 60s.
