The project was driven by an intent to restore the villa and its relationship with the surrounding landscape.
We chose to leave the interior space of the house unchanged, except for a few details useful to make the house more functional to the needs of our times. To give continuity and extension to the rooms of the villa, we brought the same microcement flooring of the outdoor patio inside the house. Together with the clients we chose the final color tone (in the nuance of an earthy color) and selected the decorations of the majolica with which we then covered, sections of two of the three bathrooms of the house.
On the north and west sides of the villa, the planimetric articulation of the internal spaces prevails, which is reflected in the volumetric movement visible on the corresponding facades, while on the east and south sides, the linear compactness of the curtain walls that delimit the patio can be appreciated.
The essentiality of the horizontal lines is compared with the punctuality of the characteristic elements of the landscape, such as the verticality of the lighthouse or the floating foliage of the pine forest, which on the island everyone calls " the forest".
We decided to focus the design attention on the external patio, re-establishing a new relationship between the full and empty spaces of the facades and conceiving a new system of free viewing axes that direct the gaze towards the sea.
Intervening in this space was like tackling a theme with a double aspect.
On the one hand, we found ourselves treating an outdoor space as if it were an " interior ", designing the "living room en plei air" of the house. Here, the sofa area and the area dedicated to convivial moments, were covered by a pergola roof covered with bamboo canes that accompany the gaze towards the blue of the sea.
The size of the patio (100 m2) allowed us to conceive an " internal garden " marked by an adult date palm, whose presence "restored" the presence of an original element of the villa. This acts as a bastion of the residence and at the same time as the counterpart of the nearby Punta Sottile lighthouse.
On the other hand, we were able to address the issue of the stereometry of the external facades, extending the wall facing east and moving the access to the villa to the right side of the front facing the sea. The extension of the pergola roof to the outside of the courtyard develops parallel to the lengthening of the external wall which, in addition to underlining the horizontality of the architecture of the villa, generates a void in the curtain wall and for the first time finally generates the "entrance" to the villa.
