Ladder between heaven and earth -

Drills

Project and Works Management: Arch. Gianni Ingardia

A staircase to reach the surface of the flat roof, here takes on the value of a bridge that connects the interior with the exterior of the house.

The stairwell of a residential building in the hinterland of Trapani, which has just been purchased by a couple about to get married and move in, needs some modifications.

First among these is the intervention requested for the stairwell, until then served by a system of concrete ramps and marble paving, which stopped on the first floor, in correspondence with the house. The desire to have the staircase continue up to the flat roof had to be measured with the unfortunate relationship between the height of the roof and the length of the perimeter of the staircase.

To solve a problem that seemed to suggest a new ramp that was very uncomfortable to walk on, I treated the staircase as if it were a bridge connecting two parts, derogating from the rule of ramps that graze the perimeter walls and conceiving the last section as diagonal and inclined towards the sky.

Drawing inspiration from the fascinating staircases of Howgarts, the last flight projects outwards thanks also to a glass prism with a metal structure, which favours the diffusion of light inside the entire stairwell, up to the ground floor.
